  5. Graphics Configuration

  8. If you experience problems with graphics, or video isn't syncronized with 
  9. audio, try running the INSTALL program from your game directory to adjust the 
  10. parameters in the LEGEND.INI file.  There are a number of options that may 
  11. improve video performance.

  14. Low Memory Problems
  15. -------------------
  16.  
  17. If you receive warnings about low memory on your computer when you start
  18. Mission Critical, check the Troubleshooting section of the manual for help.
  19. If you've only got 4MB RAM and you let your disk caching software 
  20. use part of that, then you're probably going to be low on memory.  Try
  21. disabling your disk cache software, or at least reduce its buffer size.
  22.  
  23. Type MEM /C /P at the DOS prompt to view programs loaded at startup by 
  24. CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.  For optimum performance, you should have
  25. at least 3,000,000 bytes of Extended (XMS) or Expanded (EMS) memory 
  26. available, and 560,000 bytes of Conventional memory.

  29. Windows 95 Compatibility
  30. ------------------------

  32. Mission Critical supports the autoplay capabilities of Microsoft Windows 95.
  33. Installation should automatically be initiated when you insert the CD-ROM 
  34. into the drive and close the door.  If Mission Critical is not installed on
  35. your computer, you will be prompted to specify various installation options.
  36. If you start your machine with Mission Critical inside your CD-ROM drive, 
  37. you will need to double click on your CD-ROM icon.
  38.  
  39. <Alt-Tab>, <Alt-Esc>, and screen saver options are suspended while you play
  40. Mission Critical under Windows 95.
  41.  
  42. If you are experiencing performance problems that may be related to your 
  43. CD-ROM drive, experiment with the CD-ROM settings that Windows 95 has 
  44. selected.  These settings may be changed after performing the following 
  45. actions to reach the Optimum Access Pattern submenu: press the Start 
  46. button; choose Settings; select Control Panel to bring up the Control 
  47. Panel window; select the System icon to bring up the System Properties 
  48. window; select the Performance tab; select the File System button; select 
  49. the CD-ROM tab.

  51. Electronic mail and network messaging may interfere with the game's normal
  52. operations, so you should disable them.

  55. Windows 3.1 Compatibility
  56. -------------------------

  58. Mission Critical is not designed to be installed or run from Microsoft 
  59. Windows 3.1.  Install and run the game from DOS.

  62. VESA Compatibility for Super VGA Users
  63. --------------------------------------

  65. If you want to run the game with Super VGA graphics and your graphics card
  66. is not VESA compatible at the hardware level, then you will need to load
  67. a VESA driver before running the INSTALL program and the game.  If you
  68. do not have a VESA driver for your card or you find that the driver that
  69. has been supplied doesn't work, then you have a few options: 
  70.  
  71.   (1) Call your manufacturer or dial up their BBS or Compuserve 
  72.       support forum and download a copy of their latest VESA driver.
  73.       Most all graphics card manufacturers will supply a VESA
  74.       driver on a disk with their graphics card if the card is not
  75.       VESA compatible at the hardware level.  Those that don't will
  76.       most likely have one available if you call.

  78.   (2) Use the SciTech UNIVBE version 5.1 universal VESA driver 
  79.       supplied on this CD-ROM.  To get up and running with UNIVBE,
  80.       change directories to the UNIVBE51 directory on the CD-ROM and
  81.       type INSTALL.  Please note that this is a shareware product
  82.       produced by another company and will need to be registered
  83.       if you decide to use it beyond the trial period specified
  84.       during the installation of the driver software.  Follow the
  85.       instructions on the screen during the UNIVBE installation
  86.       to register your copy.  Please note that the UNIVBE driver 
  87.       is NOT specifically required to play Mission Critical, and is 
  88.       provided for the convenience of users who do not have 
  89.       VESA compatible graphics boards or a working VESA driver.

  92. Sound Cards
  93. -----------

  95. With Sound Blaster 16, AWE32, and other cards that provide an audio mixer,
  96. we recommend setting the mixer to its default values (usually maximum for
  97. voice, MIDI, and master volumes).

  99. If you hear crackling in the louder rooms on the Lexington, select "Volume"
  100. from the command menu, and adjust the sound volume to the halfway point.
  101.  
  102. During testing we experienced problems with one Gravis Ultrasound MAX board 
  103. which caused the game to crash occasionally if the mouse was moved or clicked 
  104. as the sound card started playing some pieces of music.  Please contact 
  105. Advanced Gravis for further assistance if your Ultrasound MAX exhibits 
  106. similar behavior.

  109. Undocumented Troubleshooting Options
  110. ------------------------------------

  112. There are several command line options that may assist you in 
  113. troubleshooting problems on your system. Options can be added to the 
  114. LEGEND.INI file in the directory where Mission Critical is installed
  115. or added to the command line used to start the game.
  116.  
  117. MONO
  118. This option will disable stereo sound effects in the game and may 
  119. assist users experiencing problems with sound cards.
  120.  
  121. 8BIT
  122. This option disables 16 bit sound effects and may assist users
  123. experiencing problems with sound cards.
  124.  
  125. 8DMA
  126. This option disables 16 bit DMA usage and may assist users experiencing
  127. problems with sound cards.
  128.  
  129. METRICS=0
  130. This option may assist users who are having trouble starting the game
  131. at all. It disables diagnostic queries about your machine which may, in
  132. some cases, cause problems.

  134. KEYBOARD=KEYBOARD
  135. This option may help users who are having problems with the correct 
  136. functioning of their keyboard.

  139. Undocumented Keyboard Features

  142. There are a small number of features in Mission Critical which are only
  143. accessible through keystrokes, and are not available via the game menu
  144. or the mouse. These features and their associated keys are listed below:

  155. To assist our customer support personnel, we have included several test 
  156. programs on the CD, in a subdirectory named \TEST on Disc 1. PMEM attempts 
  157. to allocate all available memory, then reports its results.  VTEST will 
  158. test your video card's Super VGA capability and report its results.
  159. QPLAYER tests your system's overall capabilities and performance.

  165. To see a demonstration of Legend's upcoming "Shannara" game, type "DEMO"
  166. while in the root directory of the first Mission Critical CD.
